Popular fitness App Runkeeper be obtained from Asics



RunKeeper is the last application of fitness to be snapped up by a shoe company.

Continues the consolidation of fitness applications. RunKeeper Friday announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by the Japanese manufacturer Asics shoes.

The popular fitness app is the last to be acquired by a large company sportswear. Beneath the armor MapMyFitness bought for $ 150 million in November 2013, followed by markets both Endomondo and MyFitnessPal for $ 85 million and $ 475 million, respectively. Adidas entered the digital race, when the company bought Runtastic for $ 240 million last August.

RunKeeper arrived in 2008 as one of the first fitness apps on iPhone and Android. It gave users an easy way to monitor and record fitness activities such as running, walking and cycling using GPS on their smartphone. The app soon developed into one of the largest, with more than 45 million users worldwide.

Jason Jacobs, founder and CEO of Runkeeper, said in a post on the social platform means that the acquisition will not change much for users of the application. He had noted, however, that Asics will help the company to realize the dream of integrating Runkeeper platform in natural products
